Autumn Colours at Westonbirt Arboretum

Carefully laid out within a beautiful Grade One listed historic landscape, Westonbirt national arboretum is one of the finest collections of temperate trees and shrubs in the world and attracts thousands of visitors all year round. Covering an area of approximately 600 acres, it is home to 3,000 different species of trees and over 16,000 individual specimens.

Planted in the heyday of Victorian plant hunting in the mid-19th century the arboretum was established in 1829 by Robert Holford. Fascinated by rare and beautiful plants, Holford helped finance expeditions to collect specimens from around the world. It is now managed by the Forestry Commission.

A delight to visit at any time of the year, Westonbirt is perhaps best known for its spectacular display of autumn colour. Containing over 17 miles of marked paths there are numerous opportunities here for some wonderful image making. We will spending much of our time in The Old Arboretum; a carefully designed landscape offering beautiful vistas, stately avenues, and a host of rare and exotic trees from across the globe. Perhaps the most famous area here in autumn is the colourful Acer Glade; a stunning collection of exquisitely shaped maples.

Photographing trees and woodland can prove challenging and what looks good to the human eye doesn't always translate well on camera. This one day workshop is designed to guide you through the many considerations of composition, as well exposure techniques and use of filters where necessary.
