The Yorkshire Dales and Fountains Abbey - June 18th - 21st/October 15th - 18th

The Yorkshire Dales, named from the old Norse word 'dalr', meaning 'valleys', is characterised by rolling hills, lush green valleys, tumbling waterfalls and inspiring limestone features. It is one of the UK's most diverse national parks.

Covering 680 square miles of outstanding scenery and rich heritage, the Yorkshire Dales is one of the loveliest and most unspoilt areas in England possessing an unrivaled sense of tranquility. Steeped in heritage, it is a living, working landscape telling many tales of hardship over the years and of those who have helped shape what you see before you today.

Containing arguably some of the most enchanting scenery of the region, Upper Swaledale offers a wealth of photographic possibilities, with some stunning views and a variety of exquisite waterfalls along the River Swale. Its verdant valleys are a delight, the most famous of which is Gunnerside, a patchwork of fields intersected by dry stone walls and ancient barns.

In neighboring Wensleydale, man has also left his mark in the form of Dent Head viaduct. Forming part of the famous Settle-Carlisle Railway route it is a superb piece of architecture as is the nearby dramatic Ribblehead viaduct, with no less than 24 arches. Wensleydale is also home to many more lovely waterfalls which provide us with plenty of opportunities for exposure work and controlling movement of water with filters.

Our final day will be spent at Fountains Abbey; one of the largest and best preserved ruined Cistercian monasteries in England. A grade I listed building and now owned by the National Trust, Fountains Abbey is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Set in a deep wooded valley, these magnificent ruins offer us numerous possibilities for both landscape and architectural photography. With many intricate details to capture, there are also some wonderful views to be had in the tranquil Water Gardens as you wander amongst the classical statues, follies and ponds.
